CHJ performed the geotechnical investigation for the BNSF Railroad Bridge, Third Main Line, located at the San Gabriel River Crossing, Santa Fe Springs, California. The project consisted of the widening of the existing bridge to accommodate the third main rail; the existing bridge with a span of 350 feet across the San Gabriel River required widening. The purpose of the investigation was to explore and evaluate the geotechnical and geologic conditions at the subject river crossing and to provide appropriate geotechnical engineering recommendations for design and construction of the proposed improvements. The investigation included a detailed geologic investigation and liquefaction analysis. Recommendations were provided for both driven steel piles and concrete cast-in-drill-hole (CIDH) piles. In addition, recommendations were provided to mitigate the effects of liquefaction.
